a 1940 demand for Dutch slave labourers by the invading Nazis ... When my mother was a girl with her brother and her father, they had to cross a German checkpoint. Her brother's papers were lost and he risked being arrested into forced labour. My grandfather showed his papers first and had a pleasant talk with the soldiers, sharing some cigars with them, and my family passed through. My mother also sold her father's cigars door-to-door as a young girl during the occupation.
